Send Indian Food, Rice & Spices to USA, UK, Canada — DEFRA & USDA Rules 2026
Every Diwali, thousands of Indian families pack boxes of rice, dal, homemade murukku, sweets, and mango pickles — and send them to NRI children and relatives in the UK, USA, or Canada. Some boxes arrive. Many do not. A significant number are seized, destroyed, or fined — not because the sender was dishonest, but because no one told them the rules.
The most common question ShipHit receives before festival season: 'Can I send 5 kg of rice to my son in London?' The answer is not a simple yes or no. It depends on the type of rice, the packaging, the destination country, and how it is declared. Get it wrong and the entire box — including the saree you packed alongside it — may be destroyed at the UK border.
This guide explains exactly what DEFRA (UK), USDA APHIS (USA), and Canadian food import rules say about sending Indian food from India. ShipHit ships from Chennai, Coimbatore, Pondicherry to the USA, UK, UAE and 150+ countries.

Why Food Customs Rules Are Stricter Than You Think
Most NRIs think of food parcels as personal and informal. Customs authorities in the UK, USA, and Canada see agricultural products, biosecurity risks, and undeclared plant material — with serious consequences.

A box with prohibited food items can result in:
⚠️The entire consignment being seized and destroyed — including non-food items packed in the same box such as sarees, clothing, and gifts.
⚠️A formal warning or penalty issued to the sender — and future shipments from the same sender being flagged for additional inspection.
ℹ️The risk is not the food itself — it is the undeclared or incorrectly declared food. ShipHit advises on every item before dispatch so your entire consignment arrives safely.
UK Rules — DEFRA Biosecurity Regulations
After Brexit, DEFRA's biosecurity rules became significantly stricter for Indian senders. Many items previously permitted under EU rules now face UK-specific restrictions.
United Kingdom — DEFRA (Post-Brexit)
Generally Permitted
- ✓Commercially packaged snacks — Haldiram's, MTR, Priya
- ✓Commercially packaged tea and coffee (sealed, labelled)
- ✓Commercially packaged pickles in sealed glass jars
- ✓Commercial sweets and mithai from recognised brands
- ✓Commercially processed instant foods (sealed packaging)
Generally Prohibited
- ✕Raw rice, raw pulses, dried spices with seeds
- ✕Meat products, dried fish, prawn crackers
- ✕Dairy: ghee, paneer, butter, milk powder
- ✕Soil, plants, or any plant material
- ✕Homemade food of any kind — no exceptions
💡"Commercially packaged" means sealed by a manufacturer, labelled with ingredients and weight, and traceable to a registered food business. Homemade items in plastic bags do not meet this standard, regardless of how delicious they are.
USA Rules — USDA APHIS
The United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service regulates all agricultural product imports from India. Even minor non-compliance can result in the entire consignment being destroyed.
United States — USDA APHIS
Generally Permitted
- ✓Polished milled white rice — commercially sealed with English label
- ✓Commercially packaged Indian snacks with FDA-compliant English labelling
- ✓Commercially packaged pickles in sealed containers
- ✓Commercially produced sweets from recognised brands
Generally Prohibited
- ✕Raw rice, brown rice, bulk rice — risk of seeds or insects
- ✕Homemade food of any kind
- ✕Meat, poultry, and dairy without specific import permits
- ✕Items with Tamil-only labels — English required

⚠️A single insect in a 5 kg sack of rice can mean the entire consignment is destroyed and the sender is fined. Bulk or loosely packed rice — even in clean sacks — may contain seeds that trigger USDA quarantine.
What ShipHit Ships and What It Does Not
ShipHit will not ship items clearly prohibited under destination country rules. This protects your entire consignment — a prohibited item in your box can cause everything else to be seized.

⚠️Do not mix high-value items with food in the same box. If a food item is seized, the entire box is at risk — including the saree or idol you packed alongside it. Ship food-only consignments separately.
How ShipHit Handles Food Shipments Legally
ShipHit's food shipment process starts with a pre-shipment advisory — confirming what is permitted before you pack. Every food consignment is accurately declared to prevent seizures at the source.
Pre-Shipment Advisory
Tell ShipHit exactly what you want to send before you book. The team confirms what is permitted for the specific destination and what should be left out.
Accurate Declaration
Every food item is accurately declared on the commercial invoice — item name, quantity, weight, and value. Describing food as 'household items' without specifics is the approach that gets boxes seized.
Commercial Packaging Check
ShipHit flags any items that are homemade, unlabelled, or not commercially sealed. These cannot be shipped internationally — full stop.
Packing to Protect Everything
Food items, even permitted ones, can leak or leave odour residue. ShipHit packs food in sealed inner bags and separates from non-food items in the same consignment.
Dispatch and Tracking
Shipment moves via air cargo. Arrives 5–8 working days to USA; 4–7 days to UK and Europe. Live tracking link provided from pickup to delivery.
Documents Required for Food Shipments
ShipHit handles all documentation. Accurate descriptions on the commercial invoice are the most important factor in preventing customs holds — more than any other step.
- ✓Commercial invoice with full food item description — item name, brand, weight, quantity
- ✓KYC documents of the sender — PAN / Aadhaar
- ✓Recipient's full address and contact number in the destination country
- ✓For commercially packaged items: retain the original sealed packaging — do not unpack and repack
💡Before festival season (Diwali, Tamil New Year), book 10–15 days early. Food parcels arriving during peak periods face longer customs queues at destination ports.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from NRI families, festival gift-senders, and Indian food enthusiasts about shipping Indian food internationally from India.
Can I send 5 kg of rice from India to the UK?
Commercially packaged, sealed, and labelled polished rice faces significant restrictions under DEFRA biosecurity rules post-Brexit. Bulk rice or loosely packed rice is generally not permitted. Confirm with ShipHit before booking, as rules vary by rice type and packaging.
What happens if customs seizes my food parcel?
The prohibited items are typically destroyed. You receive no refund for seized goods. If the entire box is flagged, all contents — including non-food items — may be destroyed or returned at your cost.
Can I send homemade sweets or murukku to the USA?
Homemade food items are not permitted in personal shipments to the USA under USDA APHIS rules. Commercially packaged murukku and sweets from recognised brands (MTR, Haldiram's) are generally permitted if they carry English ingredient labels.
Are Indian spices allowed in the UK?
Commercially sealed and labelled ground spices (turmeric, chilli powder, coriander powder) are generally permitted. Whole dried spices and seeds face biosecurity restrictions under DEFRA.
Can I include food in the same box as clothing?
ShipHit advises against it. If a food item is flagged by customs, the entire consignment is at risk. Ship permitted food items in a separate box to protect your clothing, gifts, and valuables.
