Step-by-Step: How We Pack a Golu Doll

Six steps, about forty-five minutes a carton, in the order our Chennai bench works.

   Step 1

   Inspect and photograph

   Every doll is unwrapped and checked for chips, hairline cracks and tacky paint before anything else happens. Each piece is photographed.

   If a claim is ever filed, those photographs are the evidence that the damage happened in transit and not in the shop.

   Step 2

   Wrap the doll itself

   Acid-free tissue or glassine goes directly against painted surfaces — never bubble wrap, which imprints on paint in a warm hold. Then a layer of foam sheet, then bubble wrap with the bubbles facing outward. Thin projections get an extra foam collar of their own.

   Step 3

   Immobilise moving parts and detachables

   Anything that can articulate must be stopped from articulating. A Thanjavur nodding-head doll will knock against its own neck seating for the whole journey if the head is left free — wedge it with foam so the joint cannot move. Chettiar bommai accessories, rice sacks, weighing scales, removable limbs and jewellery all go into individually labelled bags.

   Step 4

   Build the inner carton

   Wrapped dolls go into a 3-ply inner carton with rigid dividers between them, heaviest pieces at the base, nothing touching another doll directly. Every void is filled.

   The shake test: shake the closed carton gently. If you hear or feel anything move, it is not finished.

   Step 5

   Double-box

   The inner carton is suspended inside a 5-ply outer carton with at least 5 cm of cushioning on all six sides — including underneath, which is the side people forget. The outer box absorbs impact so the inner box never receives it directly. For unfired clay this is not optional.

   Step 6

   Seal, label and document

   H-pattern taping across every seam, top and bottom. Fragile and this-way-up labels on multiple faces. The commercial invoice goes on the outside with an honest declared value — because that figure is what any insurance claim is settled against.
