Two words get used interchangeably, but they mean very different things at the export gateway.
Most items below sit in the restricted column, which is exactly why they cause confusion — a friend “sent it last year” and yours gets refused, because the route, the airline or the destination rule changed.

1. Flammable Items Not Allowed in International Courier: Perfume, Deodorant, Power Banks and Cotton
This is the single biggest reason parcels get stopped.
Anything that can ignite in a pressurised cargo hold is treated as dangerous goods under IATA's Dangerous Goods Regulations, which classify hazards into Class 1–9 with a UN number and packing group. Courier networks apply those rules strictly.
Can I send perfume or deodorant by international courier from India?
Alcohol-based perfume is a Class 3 flammable liquid. Aerosol deodorants and body sprays are pressurised containers. Neither belongs in a standard parcel, no matter how well you wrap it.
Alcohol-free attars and perfume oils are a different matter and are frequently accepted in small sealed quantities — ask before you pack, not after.
Power banks, lithium batteries and raw cotton
Loose power banks and spare lithium cells are refused outright. A lithium-ion battery under 100Wh already installed inside a device can sometimes travel under declared dangerous goods handling.
Raw cotton surprises people most: it is highly combustible, and several destinations also treat it as an agricultural product. Finished cotton garments and bedsheets are completely fine.

2. Sharp Objects: Why Scissors and Knives Are Restricted Items in Courier Shipping
If it has an edge or a point, assume it needs a conversation before it goes in the box.
Kitchen knives, tailoring scissors, razors, box cutters, garden shears — all of them are refused for two separate reasons: aviation security screening at the origin gateway, and weapons classification at the destination.
One rule can clear an item while the other still stops it, which is why “it's only a pair of scissors” is never the whole answer.
What counts as a sharp object at the export gateway?
The threshold is lower than most senders expect, and it varies sharply by country. A chef's knife that clears customs into the UAE may be classed as a controlled bladed article in the UK.
Traditional items such as an aruvamanai or a ceremonial blade almost always require prior clearance.

3. Cash, Cheque Books and Coins: Prohibited Items in International Courier
Currency is prohibited, not merely restricted.
That covers Indian rupee notes, foreign currency, coins, cheque books, blank cheques, demand drafts and any other negotiable instrument. There is no declaration form that makes it acceptable in a courier parcel.
Why one forgotten ₹5 coin holds up the entire parcel
Customers assume a coin tucked into a purse as a good-luck token is too small to matter. At the scanner it is not. Once currency is detected, the parcel is pulled for inspection, and every other item in that carton waits with it.
Export of Indian currency notes is separately regulated by the Reserve Bank of India, and no courier network will carry that compliance risk.
What to send instead
Move money by bank transfer or a licensed remittance service, and empty every pocket, purse and wallet before sealing the box.

4. Gold, Silver and Metal Products You Cannot Send Through International Courier
The most emotionally difficult refusal we make, because the items are usually deeply personal.
An engagement ring for a daughter abroad, a gold chain from a grandmother, a silver kuthuvilakku for a new home — these are the parcels nobody wants to turn away. The rule still holds.
Can I send gold jewellery or an engagement ring abroad by courier?
Not through a standard international courier. Gold, silver, diamonds and precious-metal jewellery are excluded from carrier liability cover, attract high customs duty, and are magnets for pilferage.
Commercial gems and jewellery exports do move legally from India, but through a separate authorised customs channel with RBI-linked remittance documentation — not a normal parcel booking.
